Admission to Russian universities

What Do Foreign Applicants Need to Know About Entrance Exams?

Foreign applicants who intend to study in Russia under Bachelor’s, Specialist’s, Master’s degree programs, residency or postgraduate programs must pass entrance exams to enter the university. The exam format will be determined by the university. These can be tests or an oral interview. Starting from 2020, entrance exams can be passed online.

Applicants for Bachelor’s and Specialist’s degree programs most often need to pass two entrance exams in disciplines related to the future specialty, which are decided by the university. It is worth noting that for admission to certain specialties some universities may take into account the average score of the applicant’s certificate of secondary general education, for example, the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia or Bauman Moscow State Technical University .
Students who intend to continue their studies for a Master’s degree or residency must pass the Russian language and an exam in their major discipline.

Applicants of creative specialties will also have a separate creative presentation exam.
International certificates acknowledging the level of language proficiency are not required for admission to programs taught in English. You just need to pass the entrance exams.
All universities of the Russian Federation have pre-academic programs for foreign students who prepare applicants for admission to the university. Education systems in different countries vary significantly, that is why it is always better to take additional training at the university you intend to enroll in.

Pre-university programs will also help you get brought in sync with life in Russia. The major subject in such courses will be Russian, the list of other subjects will be determined by the future specialty profile. For example, in the medical profile, students study chemistry, biology, mathematics and physics. Literature and humanities students go far back in history, social studies and literature. The training under pre-academic programs ends with passing exams and tests in the studied disciplines. After their successful passing, you will be issued an ordinary national certificate of completion of the pre-academic program.
